Economic crisis and rising military aggressiveness in the United States

* A global danger that harms Latin America: LACIS

The sub prime mortgage crisis has come to demonstrate that the U.S. economy is experiencing a general collapse, in such a way that the military-industrial complex is the only field of production that is really functioning. The others can barely sustain themselves, if they have not, in fact, ceased to function or develop their activities in other countries, either through the modality of the maquiladoras or transformed into transnational corporations that surpass, by their very nature, the strict environment of national interests.
This is the diagnosis advanced by a team of specialists consulted by the Latin American Circle for International Studies (LACIS). The experts also indicate that the dollar is being sustained against all adversities, although it is increasing besieged and weakened, thanks to the new military projects and the development of technology for military purposes.
The best example in this regard is the antimissile system that the George W. Bush administration is promoting, useless in the end analysis as an instrument of defense, according to the military, but indispensable for strengthening the U.S. economy and consolidating Washington’s hegemonic pretensions in the world.
The speed with which the United States has mobilized to install antimissile systems and installations in Western Europe, despite their rejection in countries such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece and Russia, can be attributed to the pressure of the arms industry, which could see its profits considerably reduced if orders decline. At the same time, the major projects related to the antimissile system promise to reap considerable earnings for this industry.
The main problem, according to the LACIS specialists, is that the placement of U.S. missiles in Europe represents a serious and immediate threat to the peace and stability of the world. Washington’s decision has already led to the emergence of serious tensions with Russia and the European Union, but the panorama could worsen considerably if the United States persists in its intention to create a chain of antimissile systems in the entire world, including the Latin America countries, whose security would thus be seriously affected.
The installation of the antimissile system on a global scale, is, the specialists predict, a prior step to their being launched in outer space, from where Washington could exercise a direct and potentially destructive control over the entire planet and act militarily against any countries that refuse to submit to U.S. geopolitical strategy or fail to adapt to the standards of freedom and democracy imposed by the superpower.
This is the origin of the enormous increase in U.S. military spending, the LACIS experts emphasize. This, in turn, leads to an exponential growth of international tensions and the danger of armed conflicts, including on a world scale.
Therefore, the international community increasingly understands the importance of carrying out united, broad-based efforts to stop Washington’s military insanity, before it spills over into a global conflagration of unforeseeable consequences.
