RE: Peace Between Ourselves

S Galindo - I left a meeting at work today tense and upset because I felt a coworker had been hostile and agressive with me. I wondered how I could help spread peace when I really had to struggle to respond in a productive and gentle manner. In thinking about her actions and my reactons an idea came to me. When my sons were young they wanted so much to be brave "big boys", but invariably something would frighten them. I tried to teach them that bravery did not mean they wouldn't ever be afraid; it meant they would be afraid and move forward anyway. What if spreading peace means being angry, or annoyed, or upset and choosing to respond in a constructive and peaceful manner anyway? What if simply winning that internal battle makes a difference in the world? Maybe this is painfully obvious to most people, but it was an encouraging realization for me! It made my meeting, and my day, feel more like a success than it had before.

With others focus on the connection, not the disagreement. React to their ideas not their emotions. Find common ground and build from there. Never turn away in anger, disgust or hatred. Be compassionate and passionate, but don't be a pushover. Be persistent but not overbearing.

Small things: smile, hold the door, compliment.

All*Ways, for i*find that good relationships make for good fences with lots of gates, portals, and paths that can, will and do lead both directions.

peace between ourselves

I know that most of the people who follow this webpage must have that same passion and yearning for peace that I do.
Yet I want to ask all of you, and myself, how we can truly promote peace among the people we know best and also those who we meet casually in the course of a day. Do you take steps to bring more peace into the lives of the people around you? Do you get along with your neighbors?
