hands off Iran!

Should the United States sit in Judgement of the world and decide who can have a modern military and who can't?
Are we to punish Iran like the ancient greek gods punished Prometheus for stealing fire?

It is bigotry to oppose Iran's Nuclear ambitions just because it is governed by a hereditary Islamic Theocracy.

We need to look at Iran's promise to wipe Israel off the map, and set Tel Aviv ablaze in context. It's just harmless Hyperbole.

The Soviet Union threatened to bury us once,,,and everything turned out fine

My Peace Hero

My peace hero is Miki Kashtan, co-founder (with her sister Inbal) of Bay Area Nonviolent Communication and my mentor for the past three years. I'll quote your peace hero and apply it to Miki: We bring peace when we define it, become it, and live it. Like many peace activists, Miki came to peace through reaction to violence. As an Israeli youth serving her required term in an army that was fighting terrorism with terrorism, she dedicated herself to living her dreams of peace.

I don't know a whole lot about her early days in this country, but I celebrate the day she met Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, author and founder of the global Center for Nonviolent Communication which is now headquartered in Albuquerque. She found that his teachings were in harmony with her values and offered her an effective way to walk her talk. She doesn't want to "do" NVC - she wants to "be" NVC. NVC is a non-drug-dependent altered state of consciousness that returns us from the habits that were taught to us by our domination culture to our fundamental compassionate nature.

I met Miki on a teleconference sponsored by The Peace Alliance in early summer of '05, and I decided on the spot that I wanted to study with her and do what she does. Her vision is a world where everyone's needs matter and where people have the skills they need to resolve their conflicts nonviolently.

Last year, Miki facilitated the series of meetings at which the Global Alliance for Ministries and Departments of Peace wrote its charter and self-organized into a global NGO. She has a passion for facilitating the study and practice of NVC in "underserved areas." Right now, she's on tour teaching restorative justice in Brazil and connecting across differences in Ghana - this in spite of her resolution to travel less so that she can write a book!

I'm glad she's still traveling, though, because she's coming to my side of the Mississippi the first week of August. I've got my registration and my application for financial aid turned in along with, for the first time, an application to be on her support team. Wish me luck!

And please post a Reply to Daphne's original post and tell us about your Peace Hero!

Connecting Across Differences

These are wise words, Loetoy. It's not about finding like-minded people - that's too easy! It's about connecting across differences - therein lies the challenge. We must embrace the entire range of humanity rather than out-manipulate the manipulators because all that will be accomplished by the latter strategy is to reverse the relationship between the dominated and the dominators with both groups perpetually at risk. The former strategy will succeed when we become firmly grounded in two key assumptions: People are compassionate by nature, and there are enough resources to meet everyone's needs.

Yes there are many bridges to pass. But the ultimate bridge is the bridge to understanding one another. People can say I know him or her. but the few people in this world who are willing to talk to someone of different and diverse ideas are few and far between. we all have our own ways of thinking. I grew up in a housing project in queens New York and I learned at an early age you must just get along with everyone. tolerance of different people is key to finding not only peace but inner peace within yourself. with that in mind then we will be able to cross bridges together to make our world a better place to live in.

continuous partial attention

Susan Livingston wrote:
I would remind all of us that, in this age of instantaneous mass communication, we all find more issues than we can possibly address in a meaningful and effective way, so it is imperative that we choose our battles carefully. At the same time, we can stay open to supporting those who have chosen different battles. We can focus on the idea that we are all allies. We can form meaningful partnerships and coalitions.

There's even a name for the problem you indicate here. Continuous Partial Attention. Check this out:

My Two Cents

I'm putting in my two cents worth to provide some context for the above. The discussion at the Appalachian Peace Education Center started about a week ago when one of the men was trying to organize a state-wide "action" against Senator Warner of VA because he thought this Republican leader's out-of-Iraq legislation was "tepid" and that perhaps we could shame him into taking a stronger stand by reminding him of the mess he made 30 years ago when he delayed withdrawal from Viet Nam.

I shared that I was much more interested in celebrating that there is bipartisan interest in a new direction in Iraq and expressing gratitude to Senator Warner for showing up to the left of his Democratic colleague, Senator Webb. What I didn't share is that I'm not convinced that Warner's motivations are any different than ours - he just wanted to write legislation that had half a chance of passing.

Under it all is the fact that I'm tired of angry faces and fist-shaking and Bush-bashing on the part of people who call themselves peace activists. And I get downright annoyed when they turn on each other and finger-point about who's not carrying their weight and who's flakey. I don't think demonstrating has much potential to effect social change. At the same time, I'm glad that others continue to gain satisfaction and meet their need for self-expression by demonstrating because I think demonstrations are an important reflection of public opinion.

Marshall Rosenberg says that in order to effect social change, we must harness the energy of celebration. I've noticed that activists often run from one worthy cause to another without taking the time to celebrate and congratulate each other on the peace that we DO manage to build in the world. So I'm founding an organization devoted to celebration! And I don't even have to be much of a spin doctor to find things to celebrate.

What we focus on, expands. If we focus on peace, gratitude, and celebration, then peace, gratitude, and celebration will expand. Keep your eye on PANinA.org, and go to groups.yahoo.com/group/PANinA and join the discussion there.

One must live deep within the deception of fear in order to take another's life, the sadness and depression of such a history is the single track which now continues to repeat itself over and over for the many who shall die by the hands of their own deeds, the choice of their own will . . . thus from the many will rise the few who see and know The HE(ART) of Peace . . .

Got kicked out of a pro-war blog today. The level of doublethink is high among these soldiers, their family and friends.

Depressing and sad.

it is hoped this place is more openminded.
the single track is never the song to sing.

Oil....smoil

It is not about Oil nor will any boycott be realistic enough. The numbers never have been there for Oil boycotts.
The fight is at the top of our government. The fight is hard, uphill and constant.
It is worth it, and many are fighting it from different angles.
But it was never about oil.... try world domination by a few with no country loyalites!
