Department of Peace Event with Representative James McGovernThe event with Rep. Jim McGovern was well attended this afternoon in Concord, MA. Dave Dunn introduced the event and gave some background on the Department of Peace Campaign. Pat Simon gave a wonderful introduction to Rep. McGovern. Then Rep. McGovern stepped up to the podium and gave us his thoughts about the Department of Peace, about the state of war and peace in the world today, and about what we can do to further the universal desire for peace. Read the text of his speech here. The floor was opened up for questions, and the energized audience posed many excellent ones. Discussion ranged over a broad array of topics such as the role of the media, the need for activist presence in Washington, D.C., specific aspects of the Department of Peace, etc. These would be excellent discussions to continue in the forums area of propeace.net. Follow the link at the top of the page to access that area. There was much talk about further organizing and focusing the people who wish to be involved or who which to stay informed. I hope that this web site can provide for that need. Many people I talked to expressed disillusionment at a perceived futility of their efforts. While I don't think there is any one action or statement that can change the world instantly, I do believe that the Department of Peace Campaign will change the world over time. It is the collective effort and the many voices that will create change. This is far from futile. Congratulations to everyone who attended for being a part of this.

Re: next steps
Hi Emily,
Yes I've heard from Pat Simon who organized yesterday's event. She is preparing a mailing that will go out to all attendees basically asking for someone from each district to step forward to be the coordinator. I'm guessing that coordination will go from Pat Simon, Dave Dunn and Carol Dwyer to the district coordinators to us. More details are forthcoming, but I'm sure that meeting with Rep. Meehan and all the other Reps from Mass.
We also may want to start getting people thinking about traveling to Washington, D.C. for the re-introduction of the bill in July.
Jason.
next steps
Jason
Thanks for doing so much here. I wonder what we should do next? At yesterday's meeting, we discussed calling and making an appointment to meet with Marty Meehan, once we have a good number of people. The DOP site gives very explicit instructions about what to say and do. Once we have a large number of people, we can simply call and make an appointment. I am not sure, however, what the magic number is. Have you heard back from others?
