Emily saw her first article published 71 years ago. She was 13. Subsequently, twenty-six earned awards. Mike Lowry, Stew Udall, Secretary of the Interior under 2 presidents, read her work in Congress. When she and Stew entered literary competitions, their side by side "wins" soon became a joke. In 1987, he strode into a Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers' award banquet leading three newspaper photographers and loudly announcing his frustration at receiving second place to her first. .

Emily Horswill writing appeared in local and national newspapers. For 10 years she was known among her peers as the best writer of secular inspiration west of the Missouri River.
