TomPaine.com - Will Fight For Oil-But We Won't DebateOur crippling addiction to oil is finally starting to creep into the public discourse. The Left and the Right are both calling Bush's new energy initiative "greenwash," but I for one think there's a huge element of truth in it, even if ti is a "limited hangout." Bush is repeatedly using the "addicted to oil" and "held hostage" phrase. Now Ted Koppel has an in-your-face opinion piece in the New York Times that very clearly defines why we're in Iraq. Koppel found this Dick Cheney quote from the Desert Storm era: "We're there because the fact of the matter is that part of the world controls the world supply of oil, and whoever controls the supply of oil, especially if it were a man like Saddam Hussein, with a large army and sophisticated weapons, would have a stranglehold on the American economy and on â€" indeed on the world economy." Please read this article by Patrick Doherty and pass it on. The US economy's addiction to imported oil is now the guiding force of our foreign policy. Just look at the results. http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2006/02/24/will_fight_for_oilbut_we_won... Artie

propeace quoteThe rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything is to succumb to violence. The frenzy of the activist neutralizes his or her work for peace. daily ombeyondanandarecent blog posts
