Terrific JobA minority of Americans favours withdrawal, and a minority of Americans feels that Bush is doing a terrific job in conducting his war.

Re: damn lies and statistics
* * *
Looking back through all of human history and pre history, one will find that civil war, including the american one, is the conflict which most disheartens the people. Abraham Lincoln was hated and distrusted for taking the country into war, as are all leaders in power at the time of civil war. The claim of freeing slaves or freeing an entire country will not settle the issue into the hearts and minds of the people, for it is their children which die for what is a hopeless battle of ego and power.
The present course has set in motion events that will plunge the world into a global civil war, and this war will be against fear itself.
The The Last*War is upon the horizon.

"TERRIFIC JOB"?
Steve,
Thanks for your comments. In fact I should have quoted the citation in a different way. "TERRIFIC JOB"? is maybe better?

damn lies and statistics
I'm sure you've heard the old saying about three kinds of statistics. I have a great deal more faith in statistics than that, but it is so easy to misuse them! Your quoted citation is an excellent example of that. The writer repeats the term "minority" to make it seem that there is some parity. Is there?
I call to your attention a report on recent polls on the subject of Iraq. According to the polls, the "minority" who favor withdrawal is actually very close to HALF. On the other hand, the proportion who believe the military effort is "going very well" is in the low teens - less than one out of seven Americans.
Look more closely at the questions in the polls. In the first place, respondents are given a choice between "keeping troops in Iraq until the situation has stabilized" or "bringing troops home as soon as possible". To some, it would appear that *both* of these choices suggest withdrawal, the only difference being "when". In that case, almost all Americans favor withdrawal!
Now look at the questions regarding the "military effort". None of the polls asks whether the Commander in Chief is doing a "terrific job". Where did your writer get his information? I challenge you to find ANY opinion survey that asks whether Bush is doing a "terrific" job in Iraq!
If you look back through our history as a nation, you will not find a case of a war that has become so unpopular, and about which people have been so pessimistic. Not one, not even Vietnam.
Take heart!
Steve
