If Ashes Could Roll Over

IF ASHES COULD ROLL OVER

Once Vietnam was all the rage and peace we waged
In protest songs, in marches and sit-downs.
We stood up for our beliefs
which did not mesh with the powers elite.
The horrors drove some to TM - or to LSD -
Put some in jail or early graves.
On the tube we watched in vain
As JFK, RFK, and MLK got slain.

Some of us simply said, no way, Sam, no way..

No to saluting a flag that would fly
Over a Mai Lai massacre or deface the moon,
Or be delivered to widows, mothers, fathers,
And children for compromised lives.
And Mom and Dad weren't happy with me,
Not at all, not then, but what about now?
If ashes could roll over in their graves, so they would
As this nation has forgotten what was known as good.

Some of us simply say, no way, Sam, no way..

"Bomb them back to the stone age" rings out again
From ‘Nam to Desert Storm, Iraq, to Whatever Land.
The world says, "Enough of your empiracy
Cloaked in the word democracy.
Steal our children's oil, but not their lives.
Give them back the earth to stay alive.
Your coffers are full - are they not?
And so shall they be, long after you rot."

Some of us simply say, ashes don't roll over anyway..

Save the earth, O God - by whatever name
For whatever people whose allegiance you claim!
I salute You, Almighty, in All You are,
Be your flag a Cross, a Crescent, or Star.
The red for blood, pure white for Truth.
Blood screams from Hindu, Muslim, Gentile, Jew
Christian, atheist, whoever will desire
That love in all hearts be the one burning fire.

Some of us simply say, no war Sam - Only Peace be the Way.
