Mystery Poem

A friend found this poem in a book with just the signature "E." Can anyone identify it?

You who died when the battle raged,
Arise and tell me why you fought,
Confide in me the thoughts you thought;
Or signal why the war was waged,
And how the loss and gains are gauged.

You who sleep without a name,
Arise and show the prize you won
When Father Time took back your gun;
Or beckon hope to all these lame
Who hobble haunts unknown to fame.

Is there no bonus where you are
Better than doles that mortals give,
No jewels there where angles live ----
Too fine for greedy hands to mar ----
To shade my mother's golden star?

Then, by my soul, I cannot see
One reason why this war was waged,
Nor was one burley battle raged ---
And I will swear this day shall be
A truce through all eternity.
