welcomeMember of Humanity; Citizen of EarthI'm a contributing editor, not a managing editor on this site - although my opinion has been sought from time to time when changes are contemplated or on the even more rare occasions when something offensive is going on and the intervention option is being considered. (I think there have been only two.) I write when I can, when I've participated in something I want to share with this community, or when something I read here resonates in one way or another with something I cherish. I enjoy the time I spend here, and I have connected in a deep way with a handful of cyber-friends. I hope you are inspired to contribute by what you find here.

Impeachment RisingThe House resolution to impeach Dick Cheney that was introduced by Dennis Kucinich has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee. I don't think it will happen - not because there's not support for it, because there is, but because the man is too smart to allow for the investigation of his execution of the mandates of his office. If he sees that Congress is serious, he'll simply resign. That's not to say that we should give up - if our motives are pure and not vengeful. So let's get behind this for the right reasons - because we care about our democracy and our place in the world community, and not because we want to see the man punished. Here is a very nice on-line tool where you can write to your Members of Congress AND the Speaker of the House AND the Judiciary Committee AND the Editor of your local paper with just one click. This is NOT an on-line petition - it is a powerful way to exercise your rights as a responsible citizen. The following is the letter I wrote: Dick Cheney's xenophobia knows no bounds. His big mistake is that he has underestimated the American people. We love our country as a democracy and hold precious our place in the international community, and any so-called leader who puts those things in jeopardy is in for a rough ride! As much as hawk-ish rhetoric may try to convince us that Iran poses a threat, the fact remains that international treaties and accords as well as plain decency forbid pre-emptive attack. And as much as dove-ish rhetoric may try to convince us that the situation now is identical to the prelude to the invasion of Iraq, there are some critical differences. Invade Iran and you provoke a force to be reckoned with - three times the population of Iraq and almost 10 times the wealth and power. Invade Iran and you de-stabilize the region. I never thought I'd see the day that I'd speak on behalf of our Secretary of State, but judging from recent diplomatic efforts in Israel/Palestine, she actually seems to be learning how to do her job effectively. Diplomacy DOES work, and it will work even better when professional mediators from the Department of Peace arrive on the scene to facilitate reconciliation and healing. Do we want to throw that away? I don't think so! The 110th Congress was elected on a draw-down ticket, not an escalation ticket. Please honor that mandate and dismiss those who would enforce their own will instead of the will of the people.

propeace quoteGiven the enormity of the social change that confronts us, the thing that will give us the most hope and strength to make change happen is if we learn how to celebrate. Out of a spirit of celebration will come the energy to do whatever it takes to bring about social change. daily omrecent blog postsactive discussionssimilar postswho's onlineThere are currently 0 users and 5 guests online.

So?
I could do with more of that kind of "diversion" as opposed to the usual info-tainment the media has been known to hand out! If Ms. Rice doesn't care about the Palestinians, then I choose to respect her as a person who does her job in spite of her personal preferences and prejudices.
Editor, propeace.net
I agree with you on impeachment BUT....
This statement about Condi Rice is naive and doesn't hold up under scrutiny:
"I never thought I'd see the day that I'd speak on behalf of our Secretary of State, but judging from recent diplomatic efforts in Israel/Palestine, she actually seems to be learning how to do her job effectively."
Ms. Rice is just creating diversions for the Bush Admin. to
continue it's outrageous policies of Empire in the middle east...If you think she actually cares about the Palestinians, you are mistaken. Look deeper.
This Admin. has done so much damage, Ms. Rice included, that it will take decades to clean up their mess.
