On Behalf of Mothers Everywhere....
"Peace wants a Piece of the Pie!"

"Arise all women who have hearts, say firmly: Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. In the name of womanhood and of humanity; take counsel with each other as the means whereby the great human family can live in peace..." ~ Julia Ward Howe* (1870)
With Mothers Day approaching, we would love your support with two important outreach events in honor of one of the original intents of Mothers Day as a day of peace.

1. Host a 'PEACE OF THE PIE' Party.

To further empower our work for peace, please consider hosting a "Peace of the Pie" House Party fundraiser to spread the word about why citizens all over this country are baking pies to take to their local Members of Congress on behalf of the Department of Peace Legislation (more about that below). We want a small percent of the federal budget allocated directly toward funding projects that foster a culture of peace in our nation and around the world. What we are saying is that peace wants a piece of the pie!

House parties are a key part of our grassroots campaign to spread our message and to raise funds for the campaign. They are also an important and fun way to identify volunteers and build momentum to pass this historic legislation.

Invite your friends and family over for a Pie Party sometime just before Mothers Day (serve pie, coffee and tea), inform them about our work -- with help from materials we have prepared for you -- and invite them to an opportunity to visit their local congressional district office on May 6th.

Visit http://www.thepeacealliance.org/action/mothers/house.htm to learn more about hosting a Peace of the Pie House Party fundraiser...

We have a conference call scheduled for March 29th, designed to help coach you on these parties. For more details, visit: http://www.thepeacealliance.org/confcall/houseparty.htm

* Mother's Day was in part inspired by a woman named Julia Ward Howe (Battle Hymn of the Republic), who nursed the wounded during the American Civil War. In 1870 she started a crusade to institute a Mother's Day as a Day for Peace. Visit http://www.thepeacealliance.org/action/mothers/mothproc.htm to read her Mothers Day proclamation.

2. On May 6th, tell Congress that "PEACE wants a PIECE of the PIE!"

On May 6th, the friday before Mothers Day, join members of your community and take homemade pies to your local Congressional offices with downloaded national budget pie charts showing the tiny slice that represents the portion of the US federal budget requested for the Department of Peace.

Call your local newspapers and television stations and send them a press release (we will provide a template for you). Ask them to come and take pictures of local teams delivering the pies with the banners at the local offices. Bring your children, along with pictures they've made about how they see peace, and make it a fun and festive event! This is a great way to get attention for a very important endeavor. Copies of sample press releases will be on the web site soon along with the budget pie charts.
