Denouncing Russian military action against Georgia, Senator McCain said, “in the 21st century nations don’t invade other nations.”

Like Iraq?

Apparently, the Bush administration agrees:

Dr Rice said: “This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can threaten its neighbours, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it. Things have changed.”

They have?

Mr Bush said: “Russia has sought to integrate into the diplomatic, political, economic and security structures of the 21st century. Now Russia is putting its aspirations at risk by taking actions in Georgia that are inconsistent with the principles of those institutions.”

The President also stated: “Georgia is a sovereign nation and its territorial integrity must be respected.”

It must?

Cheney spoke Sunday afternoon with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, Cheney press secretary Lee Ann McBride said. “The vice president expressed the United States’ solidarity with the Georgian people and their democratically elected government in the face of this threat to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” McBride said.

Is this a hint that only democratically elected governments are “legitimate”, and that it’s fine to invade those that aren’t?

I hope they’re right. I hope that in the 21st Century, the leaders of a nation can not get away with bombing and invading the territory of another sovereign nation, occupying it’s capital and overthrowing it’s government. But unless the American people hold our leaders accountable for the unjust actions foisted upon the nations we’re currently occupying, they will most certainly get away with doing the very things they denounce.
