Senator Obama's speech in acceptance of the Democratic nomination for President of the United States marked a turning point in American consciousness. Not that the speech itself was monumental. Nor was the man giving it himself greater or lessor than any of us. But that is precisely the awareness that has emerged over the past few months. This moment in history is not about grandstanding speeches or extraordinary superhumans in isolation. This moment is about the common, everyday people collectively elevating themselves to a new plane of political power and solidarity. At this moment, everyday people - Republicans, Greens, Independents, whoever, can be "Democrats". Not that they affiliate with that tired old party, but that they relate to the fresh energy and purpose that has been ignited within it. A political and ideological realignment is taking place. This is the kind of seismic shift that happens once in a generation.

As evidenced by tonight's climactic event, the progressive change is well underway. An Obama win or loss is inconsequential to the continuation of this shift, although the outcome of the election will affect its trajectory. A win will force the progressive movement into the mainstream, empowering, testing and refining it. A loss will further fertilize the grassroots and build an even more cohesive network of local, state and national level progressive organizations and political bases, further hollowing out the already vacuous political establishment.

The old establishment has lost its way. People will continue to abandon this sinking ship, attracted by the irresistible energy and light of the new reality that is forming. Befitting the founding principles of democracy, the people will refresh and enliven the democratic world. From here, the future holds great hope for reconciliation, understanding, cultural and personal transformation, and a world at peace. Hang on!
