paying the fiddler

It is an old maxim and a very sound one, that he that dances should always pay the fiddler. Now, sir, in the present case, if any gentlemen, whose money is a burden to them, choose to lead off a dance, I am decidedly opposed to the people's money being used to pay the fiddler...all this to settle a question in which the people have no interest, and about which they care nothing. These capitalists generally act harmoniously, and in concert, to fleece the people, and now, that they have got into a quarrel with themselves, we are called upon to appropriate the people's money to settle the quarrel.

Congressman Abraham Lincoln, January 11, 1837

PAY, PAY, AND PAY THE PIPER

Well, here we go again
It’s screw the little guy
Cut out their minimum wage
To fatten up the corporate pie.

No bid, contract windfalls
For the likes of Halliburton
Who will do what they always do
And pay kick-backs, for certain.

Enough to make a body sick
While we sit back, say, “For shame!”
While we let them do “IT” to us
And play their dirty, greedy game.

Nobody else will pay the price
Except the poor man on the street
While those with their deep pockets
Will surely make “IT” all complete.

Nobody wants to cut their “pork”
“Leave my parking garage alone!”
“Don’t raise taxes!” (for the rich)
“Let’s just get another Chinese loan!”

“Don’t pay our workers living wage!”
“We can get it cheaper over there!”
Or, “We’ll let them in to do our work!”
There’s nobody seems to care.

Now, they want a “Wal-Mart Bank”
To control all of their billions
No thought, to the jobs they cost
That will number in the millions.

Our Country in the line of fire
Worse, after the Storm has gone
Someday, I hope we will awaken
While there’s still a new morning’s dawn.

Someday, we’ll have to pay the piper
(Well, what the hell have we been doing?)
Let’s just hope the bill gets paid
Before our Country is in ruin!
