conviction/humility

In order to evolve we must accept that within us there is something unevolved. This is also known as humility. If our self-importance, arrogance and righteousness are over used then we do not see what is to be learned from a given situation. At the same time, if we do not assert ourselves and believe in the rightness of our thoughts and actions we become passive, progress stalls and we do not bring events into our lives from which we can learn. It can be tricky to intuit when to take which posture.

A desirable quality in a leader is the ability to navigate this spectrum between conviction and humility with skill and sensitivity. A great leader has passion and conviction in his/her values, but understands when to allow their own evolution, and the evolution of those whom they lead, to progress. A great leader not only has skill implementing his/her ideas, but also has skill in learning from and working with mistakes. A great leader uncovers ever greater Truth for the benefit of all of humanity. In this, a great leader recognizes that not all Truth has been uncovered, that there is still much that we don't know.

Propeace must contain elements of both sides of the conviction/humility coin. We must be convinced that we know a better way make the world than we currently see at large in the world. At the same time we must continue to allow ourselves to evolve or we risk eventual becoming mal-adapted and blind to new Truth. Finding Truth is simple and inevitable as long as we continue to seek it.
