welcomeMember of Humanity; Citizen of EarthI'm a contributing editor, not a managing editor on this site - although my opinion has been sought from time to time when changes are contemplated or on the even more rare occasions when something offensive is going on and the intervention option is being considered. (I think there have been only two.) I write when I can, when I've participated in something I want to share with this community, or when something I read here resonates in one way or another with something I cherish. I enjoy the time I spend here, and I have connected in a deep way with a handful of cyber-friends. I hope you are inspired to contribute by what you find here.

Scope of the DoPIn the Conversation with Walter Cronkite and Dennis Kucinich at the recent conference of The Peace Alliance, I was gratified by the way in which Walter Cronkite solved the seeming dilemma regarding the redundancy of the Department of Peace and the State Department. He and I would like to see the priorities reversed, especially in light of the conclusion that the Iraq fiasco was (is) the result of a failure in diplomacy. Why not demote the Secretary of State to the position of Undersecretary of International Affairs within the DoP? By the way, I've searched repeatedly through my copy of the Constitution, and nowhere do I see that a Cabinet position must be created by an act of Congress. Rather, it appears that the President can appoint at will to the Cabinet any advisors (s)he deems necessary. If we choose our candidate carefully, we needn't wait any longer than 2008! Or, now that even the corporate media is recognizing the current administration's failures in addressing both the international (Iraq) and domestic (Katrina) propeace agenda, perhaps we can frame the appointment of a Secretary of Peace and the funding of a Department of Peace as an effective way to cut his losses and pass the buck without any additional loss of face!
