Open Letter to the Progressive Democrats of AmericaDear PDA, I think our country, and democracy itself, will in a short time be in great need of healing. Wounds have been inflicted upon our families in an ill-advised war, our livlihoods in corporate profit-taking, and our liberties in fear. The anger and hatred that is abound today, that I read in your recent messages, are perfectly understandable. But we should organize ourselves not around our outrage at what exists, but to create something better. What do we want for the future? What do we want to build? What are our values? Those are the messages we should be broadcasting. Do that and votes will follow. There is no need to reduce to the same smear and derision that "the other side" uses. The victories you are celebrating are not really the victories that we are working for: We want a government that works for people's interests more than corporate interests. We want tolerance of each other to permeate our society. We want our malignant military misadventures to cease. We want a sustainable, respectful relationship with our planet. We want governance through compassion instead of fear. We want strong communities that provide harmonious living for their citizens. We want to be an instrument of stability and peace in the world community. We want elected office to be about the best ideas instead of the greatest amount of money and lust for power. These will be the real victories. As the current structure continues to thrash about during its inevitable implosion, the crisis will deepen and plenty more people will "freak out". Let us neither be part of nor celebrate the chaos. Let us be the beacon shining the way out of the chaos. Don't worry. The votes will come if our message is clear. With best regards, Jason White

propeace quote"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe,' a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation, and a foundation for inner security....." - daily ombeyondanandarecent blog postsactive discussionssimilar postswho's onlineThere are currently 0 users and 8 guests online.

I agree
We all know what kind of world we want! What kind of community do you want to live in? Who will say they want to live in the American Empire? Obviously we are living in an illusion created by the corporately controlled media. The right appeals to our blood lust and lust for power and the left appeals to our sense of outrage and no one is appealing to our capacity to love our neighbors as ourselves. What kind of community do you want to live in? Let us ask it genuinely and clearly and we the people will create a new paradigm based on knowing the end never justifies the means, only the means assures the end. Do the Good!
The means assures the end. Do the good!
The current justification for the war on terrorism was the terrorist attacts of 9/11. Who were the terrorists? The accused hijackers were not on the planes, 7 of them are still alive in the Middle East, the WTC buildings collapsed at the rate of free fall meaning they were controlled demolitions (no reasonable explanation for how Building 7 came down has even been offered), no plane struck the Pentagon, as Rumsfeld said "the missile that damaged this building", the plane in Pennsylvania was shot down, the rubble was strewn over eight miles, etc. Who were the terrorists? Only when we expose the truth of the power of the CIA Wall Street Big Oil Military Industrial complex and the corporate controlled media will we begin to have the conversations the we need to set the world on a course to justice and peace.
A*Goal
Winning is "A Goal", if one makes the way of peace a goal to win, rather than the truth of he'r being, it will be mass suicide, which is what many are now planning for under the fear they choose to live within. Stopping the lemmings who choose to rush to the sea and refuse to accept the truth of that choice is a goal which nature will not support. One may choose to see, accept and thus change the present truth, others may not, liberty and justice for all who choose to live such a life, is an attainable goal which nurture and nature will support.
Condemn the Crime, Not the Criminal
What you say is totally consistent with the attitude of reconciliation promoted by the DoP legislation. Thank you for sharing yet another example of "jumping up and down." My current frustration is particularly fueled by the fundraising efforts of PAC for the impeachment campaign. It strikes me as corrupt that we have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get an employee who already collects a salary to do the job we hired him to do. We seek a new paradigm. The old paradigm is to throw money at a problem and hope it will go away.
"Blue in a Red State"
Prerequisite
Winning most certainly IS the goal. Denial of that simple goal is tantamount to mass suicide. Is that what you mean by "many will leave?" "Past ways" and "what is to come" have nothing to say about the present truth that we are in a world of S*&T unless military spending is curtailed so that we can address the true global crises that face us as a species: environmental restoration, freedom from oppression and physical deprivation, and "liberty and justice for all."
"Blue in a Red State"
Victory*
Winning is not the goal, victory will not bring to ones eyes what is to be. Those who follow and celebrate the path of past ways will not see what is to come. Many will leave as few will understand or accept the truth put forth for all the world to see.

all the time in the world
Thank you for the vote of confidence. My letter was basically a response to an article written by William Rivers Pitt on truthout.org. An excerpt was sent out on the Progressive Democrats mailing list, to which I subscribe. I responded on the Massachusetts PDA mailing list that I was saddened by the celebratory and derisive tone. It prompted a few dozen responses from other PDA members and from Willaim Rivers Pitt, too.
Most of the responses misconstrued what I said as condoning, apologizing, going soft on, sympathizing with the criminals currently in power. Obviously this is not even close to accurate. However, I was blocked from responding on the list. So I wrote this open letter instead.
There were a handful of responses that supported my view. Even though we are in the minority, we must speak up when we notice other "progressives" engaging in politics as usual. We will get through to some of them, and they will join us in their PJs.
Order Out of Chaos
The wounds are universally felt. The deep yearning for healing is widespread. The needs are universal. But don't kid yourself into thinking that the established order can somehow be salvaged. These are multipartisan issues - not nonpartisan, since everyone is partisan about something. The solutions will not come from either of the existing parties (witness the demise of habeus corput penned by SC Senator Graham and passed with a bipartisan vote), so don't waste your breath on the PDA. The Republican mainstream fosters a culture of fear and hatred; the Democratic mainstream fosters a culture of revenge and outrage. Solutions will come from the actions of individuals who will find solidarity in the Department of Peace Campaign through the efforts of the PAJAMA Party.
